Word is that Microsoft is preparing to release a “free, full-fledged OneNote for Mac application soon”. Windows users will also see the app released as a free desktop version around the same time.
Currently, the app is part of Microsoft’s Office suite of software. However, it has never been included in its version of Mac for Office.
Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed that it is working on a new version of Office for Apple’s desktop computers. It will be the first major update to the software since 2011.
Microsoft may choose to release OneNote for Mac as part of the updated edition of Microsoft Office for Mac. However, it may also opt to release the software as a standalone product sooner.
According to reports in CNET and The Verge, Microsoft will include OneNote Clipper and Office Lens in the free version of OneNote. Clipper syncs links between PCs and mobile devices, while Office Lens allows users to take pictures of documents on their smartphone and save them as Word documents in the cloud.
The move is seen as part of Microsoft’s attempt to compete with other note taking rivals such as Evernote.
OneNote is currently available on Windows, Windows Phone, Android and iOS.
