BBC updates BBC iPlayer with new look across devices and web

The BBC has announced a new-look version of BBC iPlayer for web, TV and mobile devices. The update is now heavily image-focused with the aim being to help users discover new programming whilst offering intelligent search capabilities.

With a more consistent look across the 1000 devices that iPlayer is compatible with the BBC is hoping to build on its already impressive figures with users on average requesting over 10 million shows a day.

The first thing many users will notice is that iPlayer now features many of the design elements that were first introduced on the TV app with large icons being prominent whilst instant access to the BBC's live channels has been added at the top.

For those who arrive knowing what they want to watch iPlayer now features a more intelligent search bar with predictive auto-complete letting you access content quicker.

To balance this out the new-look iPlayer will, according to the BBC, be much more discovery-friendly with a more advanced recommendations system helping the 42 per cent of us who head to iPlayer with absolutely no clue about what to watch.

Finally the BBC has announced a new raft of iPlayer-exclusive commissions including Original Drama Shorts, Original Comedy Shorts as well as a collection of exclusive Great War interviews as part of the BBC's ongoing coverage of the First World War.

The new-look BBC iPlayer will start rolling out to devices and the web over the next couple of months so it won't be an overnight update.
